Objetivo The main objective of this additional proposal is the establishment of databases needed for the valuation over Eastern Europe of the present day regional climate simulations that are planned in the Regionalization project and also to facilitate the participation of Eastern European climatologists in these validations. Three institutions will participate: NHIA, National Hydrometeorolgical Institute of the Republic of Albania. USDMG, University of Sofia, Department of Meteorology and Geophysics. BNIMH, Bulgarian National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology. NHIA will, as an associate contractor to the Regional Meteorological Service of the Emilia Romagna Region of Italia (contractor ERSAER of the Regionalization project) build a data base of daily meteorological obervations from about 200 surface stations in Albania covering the time period selected for the mesoscale climate simulations to be performed by ERSAER (october 1989-February 1992). Using this data base NHIA will perform a statistical verification of the ERSAER simulations. A second objective will be to develop statistical downscaling procedures to allow further regionalization of climate simulations by both global and limited area models. USDMG will, with BNIMH as an associate contractor, build a climatological data base of surface station data from as many as possible of the Eastern European Countries and covering the period 1961-1990. This data base will be used to verify the planned regional simulations of the Regionalization project over the Balkan peninsula with a focus on Bulgaria. As an additional task a selection of high resolution simulations will be used to drive USDMG's Black Sea model in order to study air-sea interactions and its dependence on the characteristic length scale in the atmospheric signal. The above mentioned data bases will be made available to other partners of the Regionalization project.
