Objectif The proposed contribution of the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH) will be entered under the title ADAPTATION 0F WHEAT AND GRASSES TO A CHANGING CLIMATE. It will strengthen the modelling aspects of the existing project, by adding the experience of the group with dynamic models developed for the simulation of potential wheat yield over the last years. The models will be extended to include effects of C02 and water availability, and will be fed and tested with data obtained in the experimental part of the project CT920169. Results will be evaluated against those of models in use with the present consortium (SUCROS9O, AFRCWHEAT, WOFOST, IATA). The use of the soil water module of the NIMH "WHEAT"-model to study also potential impacts of changes in rainfall pattern will add to our understanding of the risks for regions in central Europe with climatic conditions sofar not covered by the project. The extensive datasets of local climate and crop characteristics collected at NIMH will help to evaluate year to year variations in wheat and grass development and productivity, and their sensitivity to climatic changes. On basis of the 30-year datasets of weather at various locations (17 stations) in the area a programme will be constructed to generatè climatic data corresponding with projected changes. Partners in the project will make an intercomparison of model performance, and exchange information on details of relevant modules. In addition to the wheat model development and testing, a generic model will be evaluated for productivity of grasslands. Use will be made of existing collaboration with the Romanian Institute of Research and production for pastures, and developments will be linked to the planned activities in the existing project. Specific datasets on mountain pasture productivity related to yearly weather will be available for use in the project. The assessment of the sensitivity of the important wheat growing areas in central Europe to projected climate changes will ultimately help to estimate the impact for the region and for Europe as a whole.
