Flood hazard control by multisensors storm tracking in Mediterranean areas

Ziel

The proposed research aims: to manage detailed and acurate understanding on the frequency and the characteristics of the flood events as well as the physical processes generating hazardous fllods in the Bulgarian river basins predominantly influenced by the Mediterranean climate; to build the necessary base for flood discharge modelling and forecasting in the region studied using the existing ground based monitoring systems and remotely sensed observations; to improve existing and develop new microcomputer software for flood information analysis and modelling including graphics and menu driving facilities; to facilitate the contacts of the Bulgarian scientists involved with researchers from the EC countries.
Two watersheds in the South-West Bulgaria relatively well isolated from the northern continental climate influence by the surrounding high mbuntains will be studied.
The floods there are mainly of snowmelt-rainfall type having peak discharge usualy more than 5-10 times the average one.
The hydrological conditions there are complicated: the snow cover is not stable, the melting process is going more than once during the winter when Mediterranean cyclones are passing the region, then snowmelt could be stimulated by raifall resulting to abrupt floods; the soil moisture conditions, infiltration and evapotranspiration are of significant importance for the flood waves generation.
The research is intended to be carried out for one year comprising: preparation of suitable set of daily data with duration at least 20 years for further processing; statistical data processing including application of vcrious univariate, bivariate and multi variate methods, analysis of the results and finding preliminary conclusions on the importance of the processes playing role in the flood events generation and the predictability of the floods in the region; application of simple empirical procedures for calculation the components of the hydrological cycle, linear flood routing procedures, application of simple cohceptual models; adaptation of some existing computer programmes for use on microcomputers. Improvement the algorithms by including appropriate procedu res; preparation computer programmes for graphical presentation of the computing results creating menu driven procedures.
Finaly analysis of the results of the work carried out, outline of the final conclusions, completion of the final report will be made.
