Obiettivo Cities and towns are set to be the engine house of change for public health in the new Europe. Reciprocal exchange of experience, skills and knowledge between researchers in Western and Eastern Europe is needed to develop the role of research in underpinning urban health development and training. The CityHealth network was established to contribute a research framework for the evaluation of European urban health policy and practice. Developments affecting Central and Eastern European cities challenge many of the assumptions of controlled, large-scale health interventions derived from North American models and call for a response which is specifically European in theory and method. The inclusion of researchers from the Czech Republic and Romania in the CityHealth network will stimulate the network to expand and adapt its theoretical and practical models. Experiences and data from these centres, including the results of population surveys and samples,will be shared with others in the network to develop evaluation tools. The new proposers also bring a complementary dimension to the network by adding environmental and public health to the existing social science skills and they bring specific technical expertise in the areas of environmental impact analysis, virology and the evaluation of lifestyle change. Each will conduct a specific, short research project that will increase the research capacity of the network. In return, the CityHealth network will offer experience in policy evaluation, in the development of public participation in urban health activity and in the use of health and social indicators at city level. Important issues for CEEC participants are major environmental hazards, lifestyle-related diseases and the psychosocial effects of rapid change. Involvement of the European research community in the challenges facing health policy and practice in CEEC should stimulate innovation in research, human resource management and training. Researchers will be engaged with issues such as maximising resources for urban health interventions; managing flexible, sustainable health programmes in conditions of uncertainty; implementing environmental and preventive policies at a time of resource constraint, increased competition and defensive social policy; actively involving the public in health related activities and evaluating the long-term impact of political and economic changes on social justice and the quality of life.
