Development of multi-fuel low NOx burner technology

Objectif

To obtain technical information required for designing multi-fuel burners capable of acceptable pollutant emission control.

To develop a generic multi-fuel semi-industrial scale burner.

As a result of this project individual industrial burner users and manufacturers will have an option of either designing their own burner using the developed theory or they may modify the generic burner concept for their particular application. The industry will be also provided with methods of scaling the burner design to full industrial applications.

The research will be executed in three experimental phases. Each experimental phase will be accompanied by mathematical modelling.

Phase 1 (April 1990-March 1991) will contain: design and testing of generic 2 MW burners to fire natural gas and variety of oils; minimisation of pollutant emissions by optimisation of the near burner fluid dynamics and near burner chemistry; validation of the mathematical model flame predictions against experimental data.

Phase 2 (April 1991-March 1992) will contain: finalisation of the design of 2 MW generic natural gas and oil burners and testing; combining of the design into a single generic burner; extensive examination of response of the mathematical model to variations in burner operational parameters.

Phase 3 (April 1992-March 1993) will contain: experiments on the generic scaled up 4 MW version of the burner; validation of the mathematical modelling using 4 MW experimental data; scaling of the design to full scale industrial applications using the mathematical modelling.

Many semi-industrial gas and oil flames will be measured. Both input-output measurements required for burner development and detail in-flame measurements of temperature, CO2, CO and NOx will be taken. Axial and tangential velocities of the flames will be measured with the LDV equipment available at the IFRF. The LDV equipment has been recently updated in order to allow for velocity measurements in large scale flames. In addition the combusting flows will be visualised using photographs and a laser light-sheet illumination technique.
