Objective The groups collaborating in this project will contribute to research in flux pinning in high temperature superconductors in at least three different ways : i) fundamental flux-pinning research in single crystals and thin films ii) studies on the connectivity of poly-crystalline materials iii) investigations of the relation between Jc defect morphology and the structure of the HTS. Regarding the first issue important questions are the role of the small coherence length for the elementary pinning-interaction, the weak coupling between the superconducting CuO layers, the anisotropy, the theoretical modelling for collective pinning and flux creep, the role of the distribution of energy barriers for flux pinning, etc. As to the connectivity it is important to study the relation between the short coherence length and the Josephson coupling between grains, the role of the grain boundary orientation and the oxygen depletion at the grain boundaries, the modelling of randomly connected networks, the developement of texturing techniques, the role of cladding materials like silver and the related proximity coupling, etc... Concerning defect morphology, structure and possible enhancement of Jc it is important to investigate options to add pinning defects without degrading the superconducting properties, to search for ways to increase the superconductive coupling between the CuO planes, to study the effects of heat treatments and oxygen pressure, the role of substitutions of other elements, etc...
