Monitoring inland lakes in Kenya : an environmental analysis methodology for developing countries

Obiettivo

The proposal Would analyse the apparent decline in level and volume of three large inland lakes in Kenya bY combining various types of land survey, satellite remote sensing, geographic information system (GIS) analysis and hydrological modelling. The resulting methodology based on a case study in an agriculturally significant area around three major lakes in Kenya's Central rift Valley, could be applied in other parts of Kenya as well as other developing countries. Parts of the research would test the applicability of newly available data from the first European Remote Sensing satellite, ERS-1. to monitoring of inland water resources. The methodology would fulfil a need identifie6 in Kenya's national development plans, recognised bY a Kenyan interministerial committee and endorsed bY major development agencies. It would provide the Kenyan Government with information essential to the management of an environmentally sensitive area and add a new facet to ongoing environmental monitoring activities.
The proposed study area includes agricultural regions With activity Varying from intensive wheat and maize production to vegetable and flower farming, dairy and livestock operations. One of the lakes to be analysed in the study, Lake Naivasha, is cited in Kenya's National Development plan for 1989-1993 as the country's third largest inland fisheries resource. The study has a strong environmental emphasis, seeking to identify the cause of the decline of three large inland lakes, one of which is a significant source of agricultural irrigation. The proposed interdisciplinary methodology combines hydrological modelling, satellite remote sensing and GIS in a novel Way and would attempt to prove the utility of data from the European Remote sensing Satellite, ERS-1, that has neither been available prior to the study period or integrated With the proposed type of monitoring programme.
The study and study area were selected by a Kenya-based organisation, the regional Centre for Surveying, Mapping and Remote sensing and meet objectives identified bY national and regional development agencies.
