Cel The proposal envisages joint research activities between three partner institutes in Europe and six partners in Asia, designed to improve the utilization of low-value fish species for direct human consumption. The research forms part of a comprehensive programme of technology development to ensure sustainable exploitation of fishery resources in the Asian region and to maintain per capita fish consumption, despite population growth. At present overfishing and poor management have combined to stress resources. Correcting these tendencies provides an ideal opportunity to introduce new technologies designed to make maximum use of fish resources for direct human consumption, and at the same time to make wiser use of excess supplies and waste for animal feed. The proposed fits into the cooperative research activities of the Indo-pacific Fisheries Commission (IPFC) Working party on Fish Technology and Marketing supported by FAO. If the proposal is approved this organization will also be responsible for the technical aspects of coordination. Three research areas under the general topic have been singled out for priority attention. They are: - Examination and adaptation of traditional food technologies for the utilization of low-value fish. - Application of fermentation technology to facilitate improved utilization of low-value fish and fish waste. - Investigation of the composition and stability of fish lipids and their use in nutrition.
