Integrated Multidisciplinary Study of Human Fascioliasis in the Bolivian Northern Altiplano

Objetivo

The present project is a three European team (Valencia of Spain, Dublin of Ireland and perpignan of France) and a southamerican team (La paz of Bolivia) proposal to study the human fascioliasis high endemic zone between the city of La paz and the Lake Titicaca, in the Bolivian Northen Altiplano (human endemy with very high prevalences; very high altitude), in preparation for control measures. The proposal is an integrated study which covers the following multidisciplinary aspects: A) Genetic and molecular characterization of parasite and snail vectors; B) Biological characterization of parasite and snail vectors under controlled experimental conditions and in selected natural transmission foci; c) Epidemiological studies to assess to present situation of human fascioliasis and vector geography in the Bolivian Northen Altiplano, including transmission, to allow immediate application of a new human treatment; D) search for a simple adapted laboratory model for maintaining the parasite in vivo by means of cloning through microsurgical transplantation at vector level and of adaptation to new rodent hosts in order to simplify application of molecular techniques; E) studies on biological control possibilities by means of new assays on interspecific trematode antagonisms at vector level; F) Development oE a simple, cheap, rapid and specific immunodiagnostic assay for the detection of human and animal fascioliasis; G) Application of the new immunodiagnostic assay in endemic areas of human and animal Eascioliasis in the Bolivian Altiplano, concurrently with epidemiological studies and control measures. The Einal purpose of the project is to provide the necessary basis of knowledge to undertake the preparation and execution of at large control programmes to be carried out in the Altiplano by the Bolivian team after completion of the present project. The whole research plan has been already proposed and accepted by different interested official Bolivian organisms and institutions in La paz. The project has been already started with 3-week European expedition to La paz and the endemic zone carried out in June-July 1992.
