Evaluation of high-enthalpy geothermal possibilities in Tenerife, Canary Islands

Objetivo

The objective of the project is to examine the high-temperature fluids in the subsurface of selected areas of Tenerife island by geophysical and geochemical investigations and by drilling.

In accordance with the result of previous investigations and objectives the proposed research will concentrate on the Dorsal Zone (Arafo and Fasnia) and Western Zone (Santiago del Teide) where major anomalies have been detected by previous studies. Only the seismological investigations will cover the entire island by a network of seismic stations.

The work programme includes :

1) Geochemical investigations.

1.1 Multimineral equilibrium saturation tests on water samples from existing galleries.
1.2 Generalized study of isotopic geothermometric criteria for sulphate water
1.3 Analyses of gas samples.

2) Geothermal and hydrogeological synthesis.

The available data from previous studies will be used to elaborate a conceptual model of the geothermal field in the selected areas. The natural recharge of the reservoir will be evaluated.

3) Geophysical investigations.

3.1 Magnetotelluric (MT) measurements. 40-50 MT soundings will be carried out in the selected areas.
3.2 Seismological investigations. Two field campaigns of 2 months each will be undertaken. A seismic network of 12 mobile earthquake stations will be established on the island. Data collection, processing and interpretation will be the same as those recently applied by the RWTH Aachen group for the EC project on Milos island.

4) Exploration drilling

The most promising sites selected by the above mentioned work will be checked by means of deep exploratory drillings. Two boreholes are planned (to a depth of 1000 to 1500 m). Electric logs, measurements and tests, will be carried out after drilling.

The most important studies are related to :

a) petrology, the alteration of minerals and stratigraphy;
b) porosity, permeability and formation pressure;
c) fluids and geochemistry;
d) thermal conductivity, temperature gradients and heat-flow density.
