Dynamics of Soil Fertility and Moisture Management in Savanna Farming Systems in Africa

Ziel

This research aims to explore the dynamics of soil fertility and moisture management in savanna farming systems from the perspective of small-scale farmers. Case study work will be carried out in Ethiopia, Mali and Zimbabwe. The research will identify the development options open in these three contrasting types of savanna farming system. The policy implications of these options will also be explored focusing on a contrast between low and high external input options for sustainable agriculture. A series of research phases will examine a particular question or hypothesis with a wide range of interdisciplinary methodologies, drawing on participatory rural appraisal, farming systems and on-farm research, agricultural economics, systems modelling and soil chemistry analysis. The work will start with an exploratory analysis of systems dynamics with farmers and move to a case study examination of existing practices, exploring the implications of alternative soil fertility and moisture management options through joint analysis With farmers. This will be complemented by the construction of simple systems dynamics and economic production models, together with chemical soil analysis and soil nutrient pool and flux assessments. Questions arising from this agroecosystems analysis will form the basis of on-farm experimentation to be carried out in collaboration with farmers in the three study areas.
