Objectif file: CT940373.OB Objectives and Deliverables The objective of the project is to develop a well structured, multi purpose European information tool to determine the thermal and solar characteristics of advanced windows. The tool will contain component properties and calculation routines on components and their thermal/optical interactions in a window. It will be available as a user friendly software package for widely varying applications such as product development, research and building design. It will allow the user to design the composition of a window, select specific components and take advantage immediately of their properties from databases, choose the appropriate calculation routines, set the environment conditions and format the desired output. The tool will feature different levels of detail for different types of use, ranging from rough pre-design information to window properties based on detailed component information. The levels will be downward compatible, aiming at a maximum support of the design process. Various calculation and output options allow the user to choose between output as product specifications, or as input for design tools (like PASSPORT), for thermal simulation programs for buildings (like ESP) or visual imaging programmes for buildings (like RADIANCE). See also chapter 5 for the links with complementary projects. Special attention will be paid to the inclusion of advanced (e.g. highly insulating or 'smart') components and products in the databases and routines, to allow users to select the latest techniques available or to anticipate future technology. The WIS structure will be an 'open' one, to keep up continuously with the latest developments. file: CT940373.AB Brief Description of the Research Project The general scope of the project is to develop a software package for widely varying applications such as product development, research and building design. The package will contain calculation routines on components and their thermal/optical interactions in a window and databases with component properties and parameters for the heat transfer between the components. At the moment various research institutes in Europe are individually developing computer programs for the calculation of the thermal and solar properties of window systems, based on recent CEN/ISO calculation rules, with the addition of own developed algorithms and databases for solar shadings and other, advanced components for which no international standards are available or planned. The WIS project is urgently needed to convert current individual initiatives into a Europe-wide harmonized action. The end product will stimulate international (CEN) standardization and advanced window development and application. It will create a uniform environment for the collection of data obtained in other international research projects (PASCOOL, etc.) and it will produce output for use in design and simulation tools (PASSPORT+, ESP, etc.). The calculation routines in WIS will be based on available CEN/ISO routines and routines or programs brought in by the individual participants and modified towards the uniform WIS structure. The project team includes the main European experts on the assessment and modelling of window properties as well as key persons in related international research and standardisation and in dissemination of information to the building and design practice.
