A high efficiency option for the conversion of biomass to electricity

Ziel

Objectives and Deliverables In comparison with fossil fuels, biomass sources are diffuse and energy yield, per unit volume, is low. If biofuels are to compete successfully in European energy markets, with a minimum of statutory aid, these disadvantages must be effectively countered.
The objective of the project is to demonstrate the technical and economic
viability generating electricity directly from biomass using generator sets powered by existing, mass produced internal combustion engines, marginally converted to burn suitable but readily available forms of raw biomass.

Two priciple assessment techniques willbe employed in this project: 1. The technical feasibility and characteristics of the proposed direct conversion option will be demonstrated experimentally in a short series of engine trials in which commercially prepared powdered wood and straw will be burnt, both as dry powders and as slurries, in fully instrumented laboratory engines.

2. The economic viability of complete generator systems based on this approach will be assessed in a design study in which ancillary system specifications and any necessary system development and adpatation costs, together with the resustant final fuel costs, will be evaluated, in collaboration with potential commercial equipment suppliers and end users, as a function of system scale, intented application and fuel source characteristics.
