Gas Generation in Supercompacted Waste Products

Objective

This research programme aims at investigating methods to exclude unacceptable hydrogen generation by supercompacted waste pellets as well as methods to decrease overpressure by hydrogen absorption from the in-drum atmosphere.

Work programme:

Time-dependent measurements of gas formation in supercompacted pellets
Measurement of:

- Gas analyses of inactive pellets with defined composition
- Gas analyses of real rad-waste pellets
- Gas analyses of a container
Heating of pellets under different conditions (P,T,t) followed by measurement of gas generation after thermal treatment.
Testing filters of hydrogen absorption (physical reaction)
Evaluation and tests of materials reacting with hydrogen (chemical reaction)
Proposal of technical procedures to avoid hydrogen release
