Optical/digital processor for holographic measurement of three-dimensional velocity particle size and concentration in three dimensional flow fields

Ziel

The objective of the research is the development of an optical technique for three dimensional (3D) flow velocity, size and particle concentration measurements, based on the optical/digital processing of double exposure holographic particle records. Such a technique offers the potential to replace days or weeks of experimental work in fluid dynamics using laser doppler velocimetry by a single day of measurements.

The technique proposed relies on:

a) the isolation within the recorded flow field of a volume small enough so that particles within it travel at nearly equal velocities and on the formation;
b) the later processing, of a diffraction pattern simultaneously representative of particle velocity (three components), size and concentration.

The project is structured in a demonstration stage consisting of:

- the construction of a prototype optical processor along with accompanying computer hardware and software;
- preliminary benchmarking using available, manually processed holograms recorded in conservative conditions;
- the analysis, both theoretical and experimental of the constraints and limitations of the technique;
- a thorough intercomparison of theoretical - experimental findings (iterative if necessary) to establish the criteria and rules for successfully conducting an experiment with regard to future processing; followed by further development to make the system suitable for industrial development.
