Testing of industrial products - Aggregates for construction

Objective

Aggregates are important basic materials for the construction industry and constitute 80-90% of all products in terms of mass. Their annual production exceeds 2 billion tons of which about 10% cross EU borders. In the Member States, however, different methods to test their properties exist which are incompatible and lead to trade barriers. In addition, CEN/CENELEC has been given a mandate for the development of standards using which the compliance of construction products with the Council Directive 89/106/EEC (Construction Products Directive) can be demonstrated.

In order to enable CEN TC 154 to develop harmonised European test methods, research is necessary. It will be undertaken in this project with the following objectives:

(i) the development of one European reference strength test for aggregates through the investigation of existing static and dynamic strength tests and the determination of alternative tests which produce results of a defined correlation with those of the reference test
(ii) the determination of the reproducibility (R) and repeatability (r) of and possible problems with a series of tests for aggregates through cross testing involving about 15 European laboratories in each case
(iii) the determination of the best method to make a bulk sample for tests for aggregates and of the number of sampling increments necessary.
