Instrumentation for the local measurement of refractivity and dopant concentration in optical fibers and preforms

Objectif

Optical fibre is the dominant medium for telecommucation systems. The objective of the project is to develop a prototype instrument for the characterization of optical fibres and preforms, overcoming the diffraction effects intrinsic of the methods presently recommended by CCITT (transmitted near field and refractive near field). This will allow improved on line assessment of the quality of the fibre. This instrument will be based on the Photon Scanning Tunnelling Microscope suitably modified to provide capability for local (nanometric scale) fluorescence measurement, and for compatibility with the cylindrical geometry of fibres. This instrument will allow the simultaneous measurement of both refractive index and dopant profiles. The specifications of the prototype to be developed are as follows:

- 50 nm spatial resolution of the refractive index profile, within 2E{-4} precision;
- sensitivity of 100 ppm in the measurement of dopant profiles across the core;
- user friendliness (sample preparation time less than 5 minutes)
