CONTINUOUS DRYING-QUICK BAKING PROCEDURE IN A CONTINUOUS KILN

Objetivo

Thanks to its double superimposed channel the barred furnace makes it possible to dry and bake products within the same equipment. Other possibilities are :
- due to its conception it has very quick drying and baking cycles.
- it allows the easy baking of several kinds of tiles as well as cover
accessories and gives consistent appropriate product support.
This equipment should result in a reduction in energy use of approx. 40% as compared to traditional installations, thus resulting in an annual energy saving of 500 TOE in fuel and 550,000 kWh electricity i.e. 635,000 F.
To date it has not been possible to obtain the anticipated results regarding the specific quality of products undergoing rapid drying and baking cycles such as was initially intended (3 hrs 30 mins of drying and 3 hrs. baking).
Although products thus manufactured look quite acceptable on the outside and are of similar quality to those obtained with the traditional methods, they have inferior characteristics such as certain alterations in texture. Trials are in course to determine the minimal duration of drying and baking cycles compatible with a texture not showing flaws.
The new technology is distinguished by :
- A double superimposed channel, one for drying purposes, the other for baking, all within the same equipment. - The separation into two parts, longitudinally of the stove-setting of the oven with bars so as to enable the circulation of barred waggons running on lateral rails on the outside of the furnace, excellent sealing being ensured by waterseals. - The barred waggons carry fire-proof frames which will contain the products to be dried and baked.
- The characteristic to achieve quick drying and baking cycles.
The barred furnace has technical and economical advantages as compared to traditional equipment such as tunnel or compartment dryers or casing ovens. This new technique allows, at an investment cost at the most equal to that for traditional installations, a more efficient energy use, and as such a reduction of CO2 and NOx emissions, less product rejects and a large production flexibility. The project concerns one production unit ofbaked earth tiles of 25,000 tons per year.
