PROCESSING SEWAGE DERIVED METHANE FOR USE AS A VEHICLE FUEL

Ziel

2035 m3/day of the biogas produced on the waste water treatment plant of the "Communaute Urbaine de Lille" will be recovered, cleaned and compressed to 35 Mpa to be used in urban busses of the local transit authority.
Four diesel busses will be converted to compressed gas and will be operated on their usual lines.

A gas cleaning station is installed on the sewage treatment plant of Marquette. It will treat 100 m3/hour of the biogas produced on the site to remove H2S, CO2 and water to upgrade the gas to the Compressed Natural Gas quality. The station includes a high pressure compressor (35 Mpa), a column for CO2 removal by counter current washing under pressure, a dryer by cooling and methanol injection, an innovative biological process for desulphurisation with production of solid sulphur. A fuelling equipment will deliver the gas user at a pressure of 20 Mpa.
Four busses "model Renault PR 100-2" of the current fleet operated by the TCC company "Transports en Commun de la CUDL" are converted to gas. Gas storage are installed on the roof of the busses and engine and safety modifications are directly made by the workshop of the TCC company.
A distribution station with high pressure bottles filled at Marquette will deliver the gas. The biogas will replace for each bus an average consumption of145 litres of diesel fuel.
The project includes safety and control training for bus drivers. A monitoring programme will follow the performance of both the gas cleaning station and the busses.
The project will have a significant environmental impact because of the big decrease of emission at the exhaust of the busses.
