Cel To create a state of Active Energy Awareness among British secondary school children.The project is being carried out by a team from the Tavistock Institute in London in collaboration with Oxfordshire County Council and has four closely integrated objectives:* to save energy and costs in British schools without reducing comfort;* to help create energy consciousness in today's young people, encouraging them to develop energy saving habits; * to contribute to a less polluted environment by reducing the need for non-renewable energy;* to achieve these aims on a long term basis by integrating a series of carefully developed exercises into school curricula in science, geography, mathematics and technology. The project will operate in a sample of Oxford County Council secondary schools with an equal number of control schools. To achieve Active Energy Awareness two conditions are necessary:* personal involvement;* to experience success.Groups will collect data, analyse it, make decisions as result of their findings, and put them into effect. This system has already been used in a pilot study and successfully integrated into syllabus-related exercises in geography, maths and the sciences. Towards the end of the project volunteer Energy Monitors using thermometers will be allowed to regulate heating and lighting to reduce energy consumption with the proviso that they must maintain existing standards of comfort. Careful recording of their data, together with regular feedback, will allow students to assess their effect on conserving energy. At the end of the project, results from the operational and control schools be will be compared to establish the effectiveness of this approach.
