Energy efficiency training material for the hotel and catering industries

Objective

To produce a) a bibliography on energy efficiency for use by teachers and b) guidance and case studies on good practice, aimed at hotel staff who can influence energy use.
It is hoped to show how energy can be saved without investing capital, motivation and staff training being the key to success.
Contacts with hotel industry training institutions in the UK and the rest of the EU showed the need for a comprehensive, yet user friendly, bibliography and supporting commentary on energy efficiency. It was felt that such a document would be an invaluable training aid for students in the industry. Furthermore, the Hotel Catering & Institutional Management Association (HCIMA) and other professional bodies throughout Europe would be well placed to use it as part of their training material.
Originally the intention was to confine the literature search to material published within the EU, however, it quickly became apparent that this would be far too restrictive as many publications relating to practice elsewhere, eg in North America and the Pacific, would be potentially valuable to teachers and students in the EU.
