Cel Thin slab casting with direct rolling offers the steel industry new possibilities of producing steel at lower cost. Up until now, activities in the field have been focused on process development. This research programme is mainly concerned with the problems of steel properties relating to this new process which may be characterized by high cooling rates at solidification, different equalizing heat treatment and less total reduction at the rolling mill. This research programme will investigate:- the possibility of achieving a fine-grained final microstructure despite a limited total thickness reduction during hot rolling;- the over-saturation of residuals and/or microalloying elements in austenite depending upon the cooling rate during solidification and subsequent precipitation;- the problem of hot ductility resulting from new solidification and cooling cycles applied before rolling.Steel grades concerned in the programme are C-Mn and HSLA steels, hot rolled to a final thickness ranging between 2 and 12 mm. The present integrated research programme will be performed by 11 different partners.
