Objective The advantages of producing steels in EAF with foaming slag is becoming increasingly clear. Decisive progress could be attained by developing, for both DC and AC furnaces, a more accurate slag height detection and control system based on complementing arc reactance measurements with other types of parameters such as noise level. To achieve optimized and dynamic control of the foamy slag practice, several items will be investigated during this collaborative research: - identification and selection of foam height monitoring systems using various sensors (sonicmeter, photometer, etc.);- assessment of the optimum operating zones (slag formation, arc behaviour, etc.);- modelling of slag detection and slag control. The test programme will be carried out on several modern EAF furnaces (DC single vessel, double shaft AC furnace, AC single vessel).
