An East-West perspective on the riverine load of nutrients to the Baltic Sea

Objetivo



The proposed project introduces an East-West perspective on past, present and possible future fluxes of phosphorus and nitrogen through the large Eastern European rivers that dominate the input of nutrients to the Baltic Sea. Essential parts of the study are based on new, quality-assured estimates of the riverine loads of nutrients. Resolution of the nutrient flux to major subbasins will allow data from environmental monitoring programmes to be combined with data from maps and official statistics into an integrated analysis of land-use and other factors controlling the riverine loads.

Three types of studies will form the core of the project:

(i) emission/immission-based calculations of the flux of nutrients through major Eastern and Western European river basins;
(ii) retrospective studies of the impact of dramatic, large-scale changes in point or diffuse sources on the riverine export to the sea, (iii) assessments of the impact of in-stream processes on the overall retention of nutrients in large river basins.

One specific objective of the project is to investigate whether observed differences in nutrient loads between major Baltic Sea and North Sea rivers primarily reflect: (i) differences in the input of nutrients to the studied river basins or (ii) differences in the retention (or transformation) of nutrients in soil, water and sediments. Another objective is to assess the role of time-lagged effects of past loadings in the present flux of nutrients through large European river basins.

Based on the estimated spatial and temporal distribution of the nutrient flux, the long-term effects of land-use and agricultural practices on the riverine loads of nutrients to the Baltic Sea Will be evaluated. Special attention will be paid to the feasibility of extrapolating results from extensively studied Wester European river basins to the Eastern European basins in the Baltic Sea drainage area.
