Objectif The object of this proposal is to extend contract no. CHGE-CT93-0040 to provide access of Eastern European biologists to the advanced synchrotron instrumentation at the European Synchrotron Radiation Source (ESRF) in Grenoble and at the Deutsches Elektronen Synchrotron (DESY) in Hamburg for the purposes of experimentation in structural biology. It is proposed that the European Molecular Biology Laboratory, through its existing outstations in Grenoble and Hamburg adjacent to each synchrotron co-ordinate this access by providing Short-term fellowships to visitors for data collection, data analysis and the training of young scientists in synchrotron experimentation. No comparable facilities are available in Eastern European or ex-Soviet Union. Support is sought for workstations and consumables to underpin these activities. In the last decade advances in molecular biology have greatly increased the number of bioloaical systems amenable to structural studies, particularly atomic structure determination by protein crystallography. In parallel there has been an enormous increase in demand for synchrotron radiation facilities, where intense, tunable, X-ray beams permit the measurements of high quality data and, for instance, the study of timedependent phenomena. This demand will continue to grow in the future and this proposal aims to assist biologists throughout Europe to perform experiments at the unique Synchrotron facilities in Grenoble and Hamburg under the optimal conditions.
