Sediment transport and flow at high river stage

Objective

A large flood channel facility 56m long by 10m wide with a discharge capacity of up to 1.1m3/s has been constructed at HR Wallingford to investigate the complex interaction betwen flows in a river channel and over a flood plain. The size of the channel (the only one of its kind in Europe) makes it possible to reproduce flows representative of those that occur in natural rivers - those that are strongly threedimensional in character with large lateral transfer of momentum between the flood plain and the main channel. The instrumentation on the channel includes a laser anemometer for measuring the instantaneous turbulent velocities of the flow. Data is stored and accessed on a microcomputer. An application for European researchers to use the flume has already been approved under LIP. The subject of this application is to extend the involvement of European scientists to include researchers from Central and Eastern Europe and the New Independent states of ex-USSR. The programme will advance the understanding of sediment transport and flow in rivers in flood by making available a unique facility hitherto accessible only to UK researchers to high quality teams of researchers from other European countries. The work would concentrate on improving understanding of sediment mechanics and the processes involved in the development of channel form. The studies on physical and numerical modelling of mobile-bed rivers would be interpreted in the context of its impact on the riverine environment and the long term geomorphological effects. The proposal will have the secondary objective (in conjunction with a complementary proposal in Activity 2) of strengthening scientific collaboration in Europe in this field.
