Parents' Information and ethical decision-making proces in neonatal intensive care units: staff attitudes and opinions

Objectif

The project is aimed at the evaluation of parents'information and ethical decision-making process in Neonatal Intensive care units (NICUS) from the perspective of the health personnel working in such Units, and in relation to the social, cultural, legal and ethical backgrounds of the various countries. To meet such objective it is necessary to describe: 1.The Units: equipment and facilities, staffing, and existing policies. as parents' information and decision making for severely ill newborns. 3.The existing legislation on items such as informed consent, patients' right to refuse medical care, proxy decision making for incompetent patients and newborns.
Moreover, as far as PECO countries are concerned, also basic epidemiologic data will be collected regarding vital statistics (mortality and morbidity data) and the organization of health care for mothers and newborns both at the Unit's level and, if possible, at national level.
The inclusion in our project of countries where availability of resources is probably more limited that in the rest of Europe, will enable us to understand how and how much such constraints may influence the Units' policies and the health personnel approach towards the issue of ethical decision making in neonatal intensive care.
Short term achievement of the project will be the establishing of a collaborative network between the countries of Western and Eastern Europe, with the involvment of experts from the medical, medical law, ethics and health policy fields.
Medium and long term benefits will derive from the presentation and discussion of the research findings with the staff of the participating Units, thus enabling them to critically examine their practices and to develop strategies of improvement.
