Objective The aim of the project is to carry out a European intercomparison of hydrophone calibrations in the frequency range 10-315 kHz in order to validate existing standards and methods and to identify areas where improvements are required. The project is organised on a concerted action basis, with a total of 12 participants from 7 European countries (Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Sweden and the UK). The intercomparison is organised in a "radial" fashion, with each participant calibrating three hydrophones over the above frequency range and submitting the results to the coordinator for compilation. The project is coordinated by the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) in the UK. In addition to project management, NPL's responsibility is to purchase the hydrophones, prepare a procedure document, carry out reference calibrations of the hydrophones at the start and the end of the intercomparison, circulate the hydrophones to the participants, carry out interparticipant checks on the hydrophones, and analyze the results and prepare a synthesis report. The results of the project will provide an assessment of the quality of hydrophone calibrations within Europe in this frequency range and provide a first step toward the harmonization of calibrations for underwater acoustic transducers.
