Electronic multi-media catalogues based on software agents

Cel

The pilot aims to demonstrate the viability of multi-media catalogues within the electronic market place. Technical solutions for authoring, disseminating and the retrieval of multimedia objects utilising software agents will be tested in realistic customers environments. Software agents are a new approach to some of the unresolved problems in the area. Such problems include security, intelligent search, billing and the protection of intellectual property rights. Business models that include IPR protection, cost structures, security, and commercial transactions capabilities will be developed and tested.

Aims. The proposed pilot application concerns the production of electronic consumer catalogs and journals and their delivery to customers through telematics services. The catalogs are to be interactive and exploit multi-media: text, photo, sound and film. The retrieval of information is to be consumer-driven. The business transaction that may result from consulting the catalog will also be supported, enabling a fully electronic market place.

Approach. The project will be driven by users of information technology: consumer goods retailers, catalog/journal publishers, authors of multi-media materials. The consortium includes suppliers of information technology which have mature multi-media hardware and software components as well as advanced telematics infrastructures. A number of case studies will be conducted exploring and validating alternative solutions to the tools needed to support the different activities in the information chain. The main innovative aspect of the project is the use of software agents as a way to integrate a wide variety of hardware and software services and to achieve interoperability. Software agents enable new approaches towards unresolved issues in information engineering such as security, intelligent search, billing, and protection of intellectual property rights.

Results expected. The project will act as a testbed and guideline for future business practices based on interactive electronic catalogs and journals. The main emphasis will be on validation based on well established metrics, technology assessment, and contribution to emerging standards. Business practices for the electronic market place as well as software agent architectures will be developed. Demonstrators will be created and tested in the open market involving real customers.

Impact. The proper support for the electronic market place, focusing on the transactional role of multi-media publishing, is of enormous importance for the future European consumer business. The project will increase the competitiveness of European information technology industry, primarily by enabling advanced applications with a potentially wide customer base. The commercial exploitation of the project is therefore self-evident.

Relevant work area. Although the project is driven by the needs of specific users and focuses on consumer business in order to profit from its dynamic market properties, the results will be generic to a wide variety of telematics applications and therefore contribute indirectly to other areas of the telematics program. For example, the infrastructure developed in the project can also be used for selection and delivery of administrative services. Hence this project fits in the horizontal area of information engineering.
