Virtual project library

Ziel

The pilot will develop and demonstrate a Virtual Project Library system in different industrial sectors. The VPL will address the problems of:

- facilitating access to and use of information services between all organisations involved in a projects and throughout the project life;
- fill the gap between projects, considered as major external information sources for enterprises, and corporate memory considered as internal repository of information, knowledge, and expertise.

Five important aspects will be addressed:
- projects as major communication spaces and sources of multidisciplinary knowledge information;
- inter-operability and transparent access in distributed heterogeneous systems;
- security and confidentiality;
- intelligent information processing, filtering and synthesising to interface with corporate memory;
- the suitability of current network facilities to support this type of application on a pan-European basis.

The VPL project aims to:
facilitate access to and use of information between all organisations involved in a project and all along the project life;
fill the gap between projects, considered as major external information sources for enterprises, and corporate memory considered as internal repository of information, knowledge, and expertise.

The term project is used to refer to a users community that aims at achieving a common "complex objective": to develop a product, to operate a large system.... This community comprises a wide range of bodies (enterprises acting as project contractors or suppliers, laboratories, administrations .... ), several categories of individuals (designers, managers, business people, researchers, ...). This community can be distributed in a wide geographical area.

The term information is used to refer to corporate information , support of knowledge and know-how produced or used by individuals or groups involved in projects. Corporate information is multimedia information that can be related to various domains such as sciences, techniques, economic, organisations....

To achieve this objective, it is proposed to assess feasibility to develop and demonstrate in different industrial sectors Virtual Project Library information systems. Main characteristics of VPL are: ease of use, information usability, open environment, interoperability, security.

VPL provides user-oriented information services such as: transparent access to information sources independently of the locations, types, and supports of the information;
information processing especially information filtering and synthesis;
control of access, particularly with respect to confidentiality or legal aspects. VPL is a network information system supported by wide area network infrastructure, with gateways to local corporate network.

Emphasis is put on assessment of cost-effective approaches through reuse of existing results and integration of mature technologies. That is why particular attention is paid on Internet-based solutions.

Introduction of Virtual Project Library within enterprises directly impacts on competitiveness through: better use by projects of the information sources available for industrial communities; increase of value-added and usable knowledge information that will be produced and disseminated, especially to supply corporate memories. Finally Virtual Project Library promotes new work organisation and tighter integration of all actors in involved cooperative projects.
