Computer aided simulation of textile special yarns for the spinning industry

Objectif


An innovative CAD system for melange yarns simulation was developed. The most innovative aspect is given by the approach used to obtain the yarn image and the images of some more complex objects derived from the yarn: felts and fabrics; MY-CAD's graphic engine (this is the name of the melange yarns CAD system application which was developed in the context of the CAST-SYSI project) builds yarns and melange fabrics images considering the yarn's production parameters (count, twist, etc), for this reason it is spinner oriented and represents the first example of software tool of this kind.

The application is based on a deep study of the melange yarns structure and the development of a statistical yarn model. The yarn model is the bridge that links the yarn spinning parameters with its visual aspect. The application graphic engine then translates the mathematical model in bitmapped images. The obtained results can be considered satisfying in terms of image quality, especially as for the fabrics simulation concerned. The application is fast enough for an interactive and iterative use, and, thanks to the particular graphical approach, it runs on standard PC machines with a good quality video card without requiring any expensive workstation.
