Objective The aims of this project is: a. to demonstrate that Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) infectious agent is a nucleic acid/protein complex; b. to reconstitute BSE infectivity in vitro; c. to identify agent specific molecules. The results will be: a. the reconstitution experiments, which we propose to do, will clearly show if nucleic acids are part of slow viruses; b. high quality immunological reagents or nucleic acid probes can be produced for use in clinical diagnosis and biomedical research of slow viruses worldwide.
