NEW STRATEGIES FOR IMPROVING SALT STRESS TOLERANCE IN CROP PLANTS

Objective

The major interest of this project is that it applies novel biotechnological approaches to an important problem of European agriculture: salinity. Genes with the potential to improve salt tolerance will be transferred to tomato plants by either genetic engineering, asymmetric somatic hybridization and sexual hybridization. The resulting plants will be evaluated in four member states of the European Union. In addition to salt tolerance, associated physiological traits will be characterized to facilitate future screening for this complex character. As a result of this research, yield losses caused by salinization may be reduced and rural areas menaced by desertization may be rescued.
