Cel The project intends to evaluate the feasibility of enhancing declining stocks of flatfish through release programmes. Methods for such evaluations will be developed, crucial biological aspects relating to growth and survival of released fish will be studied, and the cost/benefit analysis of such programmes in relation to fisheries will be evaluated. One of the aims of this project is to develop and implement methods for flatfish eggs, larvae and juveniles. It is important to ensure that artificially reared fish adapt easily to the natural environment when released. It is anticipated that, by characterising the important behavioural differences between hatchery-reared and wild flatfish and identifying the factors which induce them, rearing and release procedures could be defined which would maximise the survival potential of hatchery-reared fish in the sea. Behavioural studies to this effect will be carried out. The marking/tagging and behavioural studies serve as tool to the ultimate objective of the project: to evalute the effect of massive releases of artificially reared turbot and plaice in order to optimize such releases. This objective will be pursued through 2 case studies. A great number of plaice and turbot juveniles will be tagged and released at two locations. The benefits of releases to the fishery in relation to size and time of release, the exploitation pattern and effort will be investigated, as well as the growth, feeding, migration and natural mortality of different life stages of released fish as compared to wild.
