PREVENTION OF BY-CATCH OF SMALL CETACEANS IN PELAGIC TRAWLS BY TECHNICAL MEANS

Ziel

The main goal is to modify pelagic trawls to prevent the by-catch of cetaceans. This research project aims at determining how the animals are caught during actual fishing, and at finding technical solutions to the problem, either by scaring off the animals in front of the net or releasing them from the net, or both. The main species targeted for this project are: Phocoena phocoena, Delphinus delphis, and Lagenorhynchus albirostris, although it is intended that other small cetaceans should also benefit.
The research will follow-up on the current analysis of available data on by-catches. At this moment data concerning the by-catch of cetaceans in the European pelagic fishery are gathered in two related projects. To reduce the cost, parts of the research on the acoustic sensory svstems will be carried out in basins where circumstances can be controlled. The main aspects govering the by-catch of cetaceans (how and when are they caught and how they behave in the vicinity of pelagic gears) will be studied by using acoustic tracking and remote video monitoring among other techniques.
