Hybrid explosion tests with methane concentrations of between 0.5 and 4.5% by volume

Obiettivo

In this research project the way in which methane concentrations which are below the ignition limit can affect a coal dust explosion is to be investigated systematically and vice versa. The behaviour of an explosion in its initiation phase is also to be studied, making use of previous findings at the Tremonia experimental mine. However, the main focus of the research work will be on progressive explosions. Varying roadway sections are to be examined to provide valuable information on hybrid explosion propagation.

Once the results of this project are available, it should be possible to revise the CH4 limits permitted by the Inspectorate.

In coal mining underground, explosible substances are present in the form of methane and coal dust in varying quantities and concentrations. When an explosion does occur both components are nearly always involved in the combustion process. Only in a few cases have explosions actually been either pure methane or pure coal dust explosions.

The two components are known to interact as a function of their concentrations. This has been demonstrated in a whole series of laboratory tests.

Large-scale tests of the type that can be carried out at the Tremonia experimental mine have in the past been limited in number as they involve considerable outlay.
