Objective This project is phase B of a more general project dealing with odour nuisance in the iron and steel and coking industries. The preceding phase A involved three laboratories: BCRA, LECES and SBF. After drawing up a list of odour emission sources, they established the clear existence of substantial odour pollution both in working areas and in the vicinity of plants. These emissions were analysed by reliable and reproducible techniques which proved the presence, in some cases in very high concentrations, of substances constituting a potential risk to health. The aim of phase B (this research project) is to study technically feasible means of preventing and controlling odour nuisances in iron, steel and coking plants and to determine the cost of implementation. This research project will specify the most suitable techniques for reducing odour nuisance from iron and steel and coking plants. This technical phase of the project will automatically be accompanied by an economic part which will allow industrialists to carry out a full analysis of their problems and take the right decisions to solve them. This project will also provide industrialists with data enabling them to alter the operation of their plant to restrict emissions to a minimum.
