Olfactory nuisances in cold steel shops: preventive measures and control techniques - Phase I

Objectif

The research project will identify the most suitable ways of reducing or eliminating olfactory nuisances from cold steel shops.

This technical component will be accompanied automatically by an economic component allowing steelmakers to carry out a complete analysis of problems and adopt the most suitable solutions.

The project will also provide steelmakers with information to help minimize emissions from plant.

The various shops involved in cold steel working are responsible, to very different extents, for malodorous emissions. The quality of the ambient air, particularly at workplaces, is often affected by the presence of chemical compounds resulting from the volatilization of the various substances used for coating steel sheet (especially solvents or paints). Other substances are produced by the chemical degradation of the raw materials used, eg thermal cracking reactions and the various oxidations of paints and solvents in the baking furnaces. Then there is the special problem of coolants which are subject to fermentation.

Apart from the potential danger to health where concentrations exceed limit values, the smell of this chemical atmosphere is strong enough to constitute an olfactory nuisance at workplaces. If the chemical-laden air is channelled out of the shop, it has to be properly treated to ensure that the environment is not polluted.

PLAN OF WORK

First of all physico-chemical and olfactory measurements will be taken to characterize the nature and concentration of the various pollutants from cold rolling mills and sheet coating shops.

The next step will be to study ways of reducing the level of pollution by introducing new methods tested beforehand on a small scale in the laboratory, eg catalytic oxidation as a substitute for high-temperature oxidation, which consumes much more energy.

Cleaning methods, both with and without chemical additives, will also be tested.

Finally, a comprehensive study of how to optimize the operation of existing installations will be undertaken with a view to establishing whether changes in operating conditions or minor plant modifications are sufficient to solve - or even partially solve - the problem.
