Coke oven gas desulphurization with multiple alkanol amines

Objective

Experimental study of the practicability of removing sulphur from coke oven gas with multiple alkanol amines to obtain a higher degree of purification than with current processes.
General conclusions from our pilot plant tests concerning the possibilities of using other alkanolamines are:
The replacement of mono-ethanol-amine (MEA) by di-ethanol-amine (DEA) in cleaning coke oven gas (COG) is not a good alternative. Expected advantages (lower operational costs and better selectivity) were not found. Besides the scrubbing efficiency of DEA was lower than that of MEA.
The use of TEA as a scrubbing solution for COG however, can be worthwhile (significant lower steam consumption and lower amine losses). To achieve the same scrubbing efficiency as with MEA unfortunately rather high extra investment has to be made.
At present H2S is removed from the coke oven gas at Hoogovens Ijmuiden in two different ways. In coking plant number 1 the vacuum carbonate process is used and in coking plant number 2 the aqueous ammonia solution process. In both cases the CO2 also present in the gas competes with the hydrogen sulphide in the absorption process. A low hydrogen sulphide content results in lower SO2 emissions when the gas is burned.

Investigation of the cleaning effects of amines

A study of the cleaning effect of multiple (alkanol) amines on coke oven gas can provide information to help achieve:
- a higher degree of purification of the coke oven gas and less pollution of the environment
- a beneficial influence of the coke oven gas component on the stripping liquid, an increase in the regeneration efficiency of the amines, and a reduction in substances harmful to man and the environment
- reduced plant corrosion and less maintenance
- lower reaction heat, energy savings

Test layout

An absorption and stripper column, each approximately 4 m high and 0.2 m in diameter, are to be constructed in a bypass of the coke oven gas conduit downstream of the saturators in coking plant 1.
Data will be obtained on temperatures, pressures, volume flows and concentration distributions. Measurements of the various gas and liquid concentrations will partly have to be effected chemically and analytically on the basis of local samples.
