Application of solid wastes from stainless steel production as raw and auxiliary materials in industrial processes

Objective

The aim of this project is to develop procedures to adapt solid wastes generated in stainless steel production (furnace dusts and AOD converter refractories) for reuse as raw and auxiliary materials in industrial processors.

The line of research proposed in the case of furnace dust consists of stabilization by mixing with clay and subsequent heat treatment in order to attain an inert state.

The study will begin with characterization of industrial clays and reproduction of the stabilization processes in the laboratory. Direct addition of furnace dust would change the properties both of the starting material and, consequently, of the bricks obtained at the end of the production process.

The evaluation will take account of the technological properties of the bricks, which will be determined by mechanical and physical tests, and of the degree of inertness of the wastes in the baked clay, which will be established by leaching tests.

In the case of the dolomitic wastes, the line of research proposed is to start by considering the origin of these refractory materials with a view to appropriate selection and preparation of the wastes, to allow replacement of some of the dolomitic lime by the dolomitic wastes from the AOD converter.

The behaviour of this waste will be evaluated on the basis of refractory consumption, slag viscosity and the improvement in chromium and manganese yields.
