Technology for the detection and evaluation of the environmental impact of waste deposits in iron and steel industry

Objectif

The objective of this project was the development of a technology for the detection and evaluation of the environmental impact of waste deposits in the iron and steel industry.
Hydrogeochemical, pedogeochemical and biogeochemical methods were tested and evaluated on a landfill of Profilarbed at L-Schifflange. The mapping of the concentration of a series of elements in soil, water, air and plants was established for the surroundings. The dispersion and migration of pollutants was assessed by a digital model in order to classify areas contaminated by the steel industry and to evaluate short and long range effects on the environment.

The combined results of geochemistry, hydrology and biology have shown that the waste deposit of Schifflange has only moderately affected the environment.
Waste deposits in the iron and steel industry contain large quantities of various materials:
- slag from blast furnaces;
- filter deposits, wet and dry;
- refractory material;
- rumble;
- roll scales;
- household garbage;
- waste from various treatment processes.

These wastes contain chemicals which can be lixiviated by rain water and which will accumulate in soil, plants, water, animals. The accumulation of these pollutants represents thus a severe risk for the environment.

Industrial waste deposits cover large areas and their reclaim and rehabilitation represents a strong economic incentive. The objective of this rehabilitation is to render these deposits and their surroundings suitable for human settling, for industrial activities or for the other waste deposits as for example filter residues from electric furnaces. But rehabilitation can only take place if the level of pollution is known and if techniques for corrective action are available.
