Further development of filtering media for dust separation instruments and investigations on characterisitics of extraction and differential pressure under consideration of cleaning techniques

Cel

Development and testing of new filter materials under the following conditions:

- high specific filter surface load and different dust concentrations,
- use of different test dusts,
- use of different filter types.

Further development of dedusting procedures and control technology. Classification of filter media for removal of different dusts (particle size distribution, dust type, etc).
It can be said that increasing the filtration velocity beyond 4 to 5 m/min approximately is not useful in most cases but that by remodelling filtering equipment in connection with surface-active media and by new self-supportive filter elements essential developmental steps can be realized. Most of all, separation efficiences obtainable for permanent operation can be substantially improved. Furthermore, a decrease in energy consumptoin, size requirement and total expenses is feasible. The horizontal filter equipped with compact filter elements, with crude gas entrance above filter elements and moving reverse flow cleaning proved to be a superior concept.
The Silikoese-Forschungsinstitut carried out two consecutive research projects under the fourth and fifth programmes to study the lead capacity of filter media. It was found during the development stages that the possibilities of a high specific filter surface load are improved by switching from deep filtration to surface filtration, and loads of 6 m{3}/m{2}/min were achieved.

However, greater loads led to increased difficulties, probably because of insufficient regeneration. It also became clear that results which are applicable to actual practice cannot be obtained through short-term trials, as long-term trials are needed to reveal certain filter characteristics. The test duration per filter medium was therefore increased to graeter than or equal to 500 h.

Filtration and separation properties are also very much dependent on the substance to be separated. In future, therefore, mine dusts from filter plants are to be included in the studies, taking account of different moisture contents in the dusts, in order to compare them with standard dusts (slate dust DIN 70).

A test stand already in existence at the SFI will have to be converted for the new tests, particularly in respect of dedusting technology. An attempt is also to be made to improve understanding of the links between filter media surface design, depth of dust penetration into the filter media, regeneration capacity in relation to penetration depth, and effectiveness of the cleaning pressure surge on the dust-covered surface of the filter media (with different types thereof).
