Control of noise in face ends and headings

Objective

The purposes of the project is to:
assess the noise generated by face and heading machinery
identify the design parameters responsible for noise generation
apply noise reduction techniques to minimise face end and heading machinery noise
reduce the size and number of noise zones in face ends and headings
minimise the noise exposure of face end and heading workers

Research will be undertaken to quantify noise from individual sources and to identify design parameters for reducing the generated noise. Within the project, machinery associated with achieving rapid drivage rates in headings will be studied. Work undertaken under a current research programme, 7260-05/037/08, has identified dominant noise sources in a particular type of roadheading machine. Noise levels on these machines have been successfully reduced and this work will be extended to cover other machinery used in advanced headings and drivages. The dominant noise generating components will be identified with particular reference to power packs, drive transmissions, cutting units and impact sources. Noise emissions will be reduced by the application of structural damping; and the redesign of hydraulic circuitry. The reduction of noise from electric motors installed on these machines will be extended to cover other sizes of motor.

Crushers are increasingly being used at the stage loader feed or discharge ends within a confined space. The forces generated and transmitted from the breaking action will be considered, and the response of structural components assessed. The noise from crushers will be analysed to identify design parameters for reducing the generated noise. Consideration will be given to the reduction of emitted noise by the use of vibration isolation, structural damping and enclosure, and if possible altering the layout of noise sources to reduce the exposure of workers.

Pumping systems are essential components of hydraulic face supports as well as water spraying systems and pump packing systems. These pumps handle water-based fluids at high pressures and emit high noise levels. Fluid borne noise can result in noise emissions from remote surfaces; therefore the various noise generation, transmission and emmision paths will be assessed and design parameters identified to reduce noise levels.

The conveyance of extracted material causes noise primarily of an impacting nature and particular attention will be paid to reducing these sources, by reducing the impact energy and reducing the structural vibration caused by impacts. Under prveious contracts (7258-11/08/094 and 7260-05/037/08) the vibrational characteristics of chain conveying systems has been investigated. Stage loaders or other chain conveyors are particularly noisy when empty or partially empty. It is proposed to study methods of minimising the noise emissions from a stage loader by the addition of vibrational damping to the structure or by partial enclosure to reduce the noise radiated.

Assessments of face ends and headings will be conducted to identify any other significant noise sources that may require noise suppression.
