Objective
In project No 7260-02/006/001 on the same subject new methods of wet dust suppression were developed and tested. Work since carried out on the development of a control system for contact advance of supports (residual thrust control) and its use in conjunction with flushing of the roof canopies has shown that the simple hydraulic control devices hitherto used for residual thrust control are not adequate and must be replaced by more suitable means. The purpose of this project is to develop a control system for canopy flushing in conjunction with residual thrust control which can be used irrespective of the adjacent strata conditions and support characteristics.
In an initial phase, control devices will be developed which
- prevent displacement of the conveyor during support advance;
- take into account the features of the support such as
base and canopy length
attachment points of the advancing mechanism and resulting turning moments
type of support (eg chock or shield).
Irrespective of the above parameters, these units must ensure reliable operation of the supports in automatic mode.
The necessary hardware and software will be developed and optimised on test rigs until pitworthy. The optimum locations for the various transducers will also have to be worked out.
In a second phase, this residual thrust control will be operated in conjunction with flushing of the support roof canopies. Various parameters affected by residual thrust control must be determined and taken into account in controlling the canopy flushing. The factors involved include:
- reduction, or even elimination, of debris build-up on the canopies;
- operation with residual support pressure against the roof and hence further compaction of the debris even during support advance;
- composition of the roof debris;
- speeding up of support advance.
Canopy flushing will be further improved to take account of these changed parameters. It will be necessary to optimise
- nozzle arrangement
- number of nozzles
- nozzle diameters
- water pressures and quantities
- timing and duration of flushing
- feasibility of retrofitting to supports already in service
so that the workforce cannot be subjected to any nuisance from escaping water.
Finally, pit trials will be conducted to prove the new control system in conjunction with modified supports.
