DEVELOPMENT OF MOBILE COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS ON SOLID STATE ELEMENTARY BASIS

Objective

Recent investigations concerning the mobile communication systems include architectures based on the advanced solid state components for analog and digital signal processing. To the aim, a number of Projects have been financed by European Community under the RACE program, involving both concepts and architectures for Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS), such as CODIT, MONET, ATDMA, TSUNAMI, and for Mobile Broadband System (MBS). In these projects was included also the definition of radio protocol architectures for UMTS with reference to Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) and Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) techniques, performance comparison between the two techniques, software simulation models, definition of traffic environment, main noise sources and experimental testing.

The attention will be devoted to the increasing of the capacity of cellular wide band communication systems with multiple access. The three principles of cellular system organization actually used are Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA), TDMA (IS-54 and GSM Standards) and CDMA (Standard project of Qualcomm Inc.). Systems with CDMA organization can ensure increase in the capacity up to 4-6 times with respect to TDMA systems. A standard CDMA network system which has been proposed so far, operates with narrowband signals (1.25 MHz), thus limiting its real capacity.

Solid-state components can be used for the realization of advanced mobile communication systems with improved parameters. As far as cellular systems are concerned we propose to pass from signals with 1.25 MHz bandwidth to signals with 12.5 MHz bandwidth. We denote this system by CTDMA (Code Time Division Multiple Access), so combining the advantages of both CDMA and TDMA. Cellular systems based on CTDMA principle implies that only one communication channel with 12.5 MHz bandwidth is used, similarly to a CDMA system in the frequency division while, at the same time, the signal duration corresponds to that of a TDMA system. That means in the time division the operating mode of CTDMA system is very similar to TDMA system, that represents a large technical convenience. The use of CTDMA on solid-state elementary basis allows to improve substantially characteristics such as mass and overall dimensions, power consumption, reliability, possibility of miniaturization and processing of complex signals in analog form without preliminary quantization.

Therefore, this Project includes the investigation of the main capabi-lities of one promising radio mobile cellular communication system, mainly devoted to urban traffic control, and the definition of the relevant electronic architecture based on both time and code division multiple access organization. The design of the CTDMA system will be carried out according to the existing Standards of systems FDMA, TDMA and CDMA. The principal models of basic functional blocks of solid-state electronic and acousto-optical devices for CTDMA system will be developed and the recommendations on creation of specia-lized functional modules will be defined.
