Standardization of Lung Function Tests

Objectif

The Working Party issued recommendations on standardised lung function testing in 1983. In the course of this work, a need for further clarification emerged in a number of areas of standardisation.

The proposed research involves international cooperation between nine institutes in seven EC Member States.

METHODS AND MEANS BY WHICH THE AIMS ARE TO BE ACHIEVED

Verification of available parameters derived from forced vital capacity and collection of new data in the Barcelona area.

Development of new measuring techniques making it possible to assess airway inflammation from airway cells acquired non-invasively.

Perfection of an instrument on the basis of calibration of peak flow meters and assessment of further factors which influence calibration (temperature, humidity, altitude) in order to establish to what extent peak flow is dependent on measuring instruments.

Study of thermal exchange between subject and plethysmograph with a view to improving direct measurement for investigating obstructive lung disease.
