START-UP AND DEMONSTRATION PHASES OF ENERGY CONVERSION : HEAT OF LOW PRESSURE STEAM TO ELECTRICITY

Objectif

A Vacuum Steam Turbine Generator, installed under DEMO Project EE./00347/88/HE, operates since December 1990, receiving 40% of the total Back Pressure Steam of the Boiler/Power Generating Station of ETMA. Low temperature condensates produce warm water to replace steam in a. Air Conditioning of Process areas, and b. Other low Temperature process heating requirements.
The result is an increse of the self Power generation, by approx. 1200-1500 kW on an annual average, i.e. from 50 to 70% of the total Energy needs of the factory, at 80 gr/kWh fuel consumption.
Cost of the Project mounted to 420.000.000 drc or 2 MM ECU. Estimated direct annual savings from Power cost difference are 70-100.000.000 drcs and ETMA is independent from Public Power supply with major indirect benefits.
The project, is a continuation of the successful DEMO Project and refers to the Start-up and Demonstration phases not included in the initial contract. The total cost is approx. 30.000.000 drcs or 150.00 ECU.L%

The ETMA Power Station produces 50 tons of steam at 62 bars, passed through a Back Pressure Turbine Generator. According to the scheme under Project EE./00347/88/HE/.. 40% of this steam passesthrough a Superheater and a new Vacuum Turbine Generator, generating additional power plus two low pressure steam streams the extract and the vacuum condensate.
At low Pressure (0,4 to 1,4 ata) these steam streams still have sufficient Energy to be used for Air Conditioning requirements and low temperature process heating needs (spinning baths up to 55 deg. C).
THE INNOVATION OF THE INITIAL PROJECT is to spray warm water, from the Vacuum Turbogenerator Condensers, instead of steam, to the Heating/Humidifying Unit for conditioning 2.000.000 m3/hr of air required for the process areas.
The initial DEMO Project has been accomplished successfully. The present Project refers only to the Start-up and Demonstration phases, which were not included in the initial contract.
THE EXPECTED EFFICIENCY OF THE NEW SCHEME
The superheater increased the overall boiler efficiency from 92% to 93,5% yielding parallely the required for the Vacuum Turbine, steam quality.
Additional Electric Energy is generated, at an estimate of 117,5 kWh/ton (vacuum condensate steam) or 43 kWh/ton (extract steam), depending on the Turbine operating load. Power Station generating capacity will increase by 25-33% with max. 5% increase of the total fuel consumption.
THE EXPECTED ECONOMIC IMPACT OF THE NEW SCHEME
Additional Energy will cost apporx 3 drcs/kWh versus 11-12 drcs charged by the Public Power Supply (PPC-DEH), at a fuel consumption of 80 gr/kWh.
Efficiency of the Turbine is depending on the seasonal variations of the ambient conditions, therefore a long term monitoring/demonstration programme is required for evaluating the results and optimizing the operation of the new Turbine. Start-up and Demonstration phases, which were not included in the scope of the initial Contract, will determine under the present THERMIE Contract the efficiency of the Scheme.
