PASSIVE AIR CONDITIONING IN HIGHLY INSULATED COMMERCIAL BUILDINGS WITH INTEGRATED STORAGE IN STRUCTURAL COMPONENTS

Ziel

To minimise both the energy used and environmental pollution and also to provide year round comfort in commercial buildings by:
a) use of highly insulated and heavyweight internal structures to stabilise internal temperatures.
b) maximum use of exhaust air reclaim for heating and cooling purposes
c) optimising the passive storage capability of the building and its environmental system to utilise direct free air cooling in summer and use of surplus internal and solar heat gain in winter. The expected energy saving is calculated at 879,170 kWh/a. The capital cost of installing the system is less than a conventional gas fired system with packaged air conditioners and therefore a payback period is not applicable.

The project is to construct five two storey commercial office/light industrial buildings totalling 5297 m2. A new heating and ventilation system will be incorporated into the buildings which will be fully integrated within the structural design and highly insulated building envelopes.
Although parts of this approach have been employed previously in the EC the following features are combined for the first time into a cohesive package: a) an internal source exhaust air heat recovery by a heat pump incorporating indirect evaporative cooling.
b) the use of hollow core floor slabs a air paths in highly insulated commercial and office development.
c) use of solar shaded triple glazing without room heaters to provide down draft protection of supplementary room heating.
d) the use of an energy management system to maximise the passive storage of internal heat gain and/or free cooling with the active diurnal storage of supplementary heating and cooling energy needs. The capital costs of the project system are less than a conventional gas fire system with packaged air conditioners and the savings in energy consumption are significant. It follows that there is no payback as there are both capital and annual savings to be derived from the project system. Monitoring of the installation and the operation of the system will be undertaken by the Building Research Establishment which is the principle organisation in the UK that carries out research into buildings and construction. The Building Research Establishment also manages a major programme of research and demonstrations for the energy efficiency office in the UK. Full reporting services will follow on from the monitoring process and papers will be available for world wide distribution.
