DEMONSTRATION OF THE RES 1 MW HORIZONTAL AXIS WIND TURBINE

Ziel

To design manufacture, operate and monitor a second generation 1 MW horizontal wind turbine.
The design will adopt an innovatory approach to the integration of the major mechanical components within the nacelle to achieve low weight and low cost. Sound and vibration control and absorption measures will be incorporated at the outset of the design to minise environmental impact due to noise.
The RES 1 MW will be a pre-production prototype which, following the initial 24 month monitoring period, will be marketed for use in commercial wind farms.

The RES 1 MW wind turbine will be a three bladed full span pitch controlled machine with a diameter of 50 m and a rated electrical power of 1000 kW. The leading machine parameters are summarised below :

Integration of the major mechanical transmission components is an important consideration in the design of a low weight and low cost wind turbine. This approach, together with the measures to minimise noise emissions, will result in a second generation 1 MW wind turbine with the capability of generating electricity at more competitive costs than current medium size machines. The demonstration project includes a 22 month monitoring period which will provide data on the performance and reliability of the wind turbine.
