250 KW WINDTURBINE INCLUDED IN A WIND-ENERGY-TOTALENERGY PROJECT FOR PROCESS WATER PRODUCTION AND TRANSPORT

Obiettivo

In order to optimize and demonstrate the application possibilities of wind energy and total energy systems for the process water production and transportation, two 250 kW wind turbines has been installed and connected in parallel with the 3 existing diesel engines which are each one connected to
646 kW generators. Estimated annual yield is 337 MWh from each wind turbine.
The wind turbines have reached during 1988, 800.000 KWh of energy production which should be compared to the initially estimated 674.000 KWh.
The two diesel generators have been successfully converted into combined heat and power plants raising their efficiency from 31 % to around 85 %.
The combined operation of wind turbines and the combined heat and power plants was very successful resulting to important fuel savings.
The performance data for the last two years show some periods of lower production, due to small but frequent problems of the WTs. The project could have been very successful had the wind turbines performed better.
Two "Windmaster" type wind turbines with 250 KW rated power has been installed at Andijk by WRK and operate in parallel with 3 existing diesel-generators. The wind turbines have a diameter of 22.5 m and the ax height is 31 m. The use of the wind turbine will drasticaly reduce the power supply by the public power company. Basic condition is that the self generated power will not exceed 950 KW which means that the utilization ratio of the wind turbines will be 100%. The control system prevents supplying power back into the public power network in order to avoid less profitable situation.
There are three different operating modes :
a) Emergency-power operation (isolated or simultaneous operation); in this situation the output has to be adjusted in line with electricity demand.
b) CHP operation, where the output is adjusted to meet the heat demand (one of the CHP diesels is then activated). As a result the electricity generated depends on the heat requirement, subject to certain limits.
c) Peak-load operation. In this situation the unit must supply the full power because the number of available kVAs per quarter (contractually available power from the public grid) threatens to be exceeded.
All special situations such as emergency-power, peak-load operation, heat-demand regulation and import/export regulation are regulated by the controller.
The initially estimated annual yield was 674 MWh from the wind turbines and 2300 MWh from the combined heat and power plants.
